#waspworkout 🏃🏽‍♀️ #stretchandstrength! I'm a fan of strength. I come from a family of strong individuals. We build muscle easily and pride ourselves in working harder than the next guy. I'm the gal that likes to compete with men in push-up contests and drinking contests alike. But over the years I have come to learn that I don't want strength without flexibility. Both in body and in mind, it is a limber muscle that will give me more definition, greater reach, increased agility, more fluid movement and sharper reflexes. In the past five years I have devoted about 30-50% of my exercise time to stretching. I have found that no other activity can offer me the same bounty of results. If I'm traveling and have nowhere to exercise, I stretch. If I'm bloated and feel like my digestion has slowed, I stretch. To clear a persistent mental fog, I stretch. To release my stresses from a day of work or motherhood, I stretch. Crazy thing is, I used to HATE stretching. That is until I realized that it doesn't have to be a static discipline, but can be…well…flexible; an almost musical expression of whatever it is I'm in need of. No two stretching sessions of mine will ever look the same. I just go with the flow. Whatever my body feels like doing, I do it. Sometimes my stretching is slow and meditative. Sometimes it's wild and inventive. Sometimes my stretching will resemble dancing more than yoga. Sometimes my stretching is weak and uninspired. But no matter what the expression, I always try to honour my mood and I always come away with results. Stretching builds my strength, my stamina, my circulation, my heart, my lungs, my digestion, my discipline, my attitude, my outlook and my mood. And…maybe most importantly 🤔…it keeps me SLIM. 😉😉😉. (That's a joke. It does keep me slim. But come on…slim's not everything. Right??) (PS – For full 18min vid, see link in bio.)

#waspworkout 🏃🏽‍♀️#JaneFonda Part 2: Of all the fads and science that I've tried, basic Jane Fonda #workout moves are the one thing I've found that is simple enough to be sustainable and portable, effective enough to be worth it, fun enough to keep going, and safe enough to feel good about doing it. I'm a child of the eighties. I try to get lots of veggies and, otherwise, I eat whatever I want in moderate quantities. I don't do "yoga", I stretch. I do squats, crunches, arm curls and push-ups…not pilates. I don't have a fancy routine or sneaky tricks. Let me be a living reminder that we don't need all that modern jazz to be fit and healthy. If you love that stuff, excellent! Enjoy it! BUT.. in a pinch, if life gets complicated and you feel #health and #fitness has just become one more complication…remember, it can be as simple as an after-dinner walk and some crunches before bed every night. Let's not get crazy, kids, it's health, not rocket science. PS – I ate a big, sticky cinnamon bun last night. Just to keep it all in perspective. #balance PSS – I look forward to Fonda-ing it up with you in more detail in future #waspworkout posts! 🙌🏻)

#waspworkout 🏃🏽‍♀️ #JaneFonda Part 1: I'm a child of the 80's. I grew up racing to put on nylons under my full-piece bathing suit with legs warmers and sweat bands (For real. God i wish i had a picture!) to join my mom in her VHS "Jane Fonda Complete Workout". I loved it. So did my sisters. It was fun, so much like how we liked to play – dancing around in wild costumes to tacky music! Since that time, it feels like #health and #fitness has become so much more complicated. It is my perception that, back then, there used to be 3 basic principles for health and fitness: 1. calories in/calories out (try not to have the later be greater than the former) 2. avoid sugar and "junk food" and 3. MOVE…get some exercise. But now! Omg, NOW there's Atkins, and Zone, and Volumetrics. There's veganism, and fruitarianism, and ovo vegetarianism. There's gluten-free, and fat-free, and sugar-free and now calorie-free?! There's Weight Watchers, and Nutrisystem, and Ketogenic, and Slim Fast. There's Hatha Yoga, and Kundalini Yoga, and Ashtanga Yoga, and hot Bikram yoga, and now even Hot Booty Yoga 😳. There's BowFlex, and Thigh Master, and Shake Weight, and Tae Bo, and Slendertone. There are diet pills, and shakes, and bars, and herbs. There are Super Foods! There's spirulina, and aloe, and cacao, and tumeric, acai, and gogi berries. And like with our characters and personalities, everything needs a special label with medication or therapy and instructions! Like our legal system, we've become so bogged down with minutia, specifics, books, verbiage and PC that we don't know up from down. Some of us have been duped into thinking that having good health and looking our best requires a PHD. Deep down inside, I'm an 80-year-old woman. I'm very resistant to fads, skeptical about technology, a believer in simplicity and annoyed by change in general. So…as embarrassing as it might be, I have stuck with my Jane Fonda Complete Workout moves, basically my whole life. In the past two decades, I've dabbled in Bikram, in weight-loss pills, Atkins, Slendertone, gym machines, and Superfoods. But ultimately I always come back to my Jane. Why? Why Holy Jane? TBC…
